GREAT NEWS about Longfellow’s 40th Street Medians!

I am thrilled to announce that the landscape team (Four Dimensions) will begin the improvement work on the 40th Street Medians this MONDAY, December 12! We’ve hit a lot of bumps in the road along the way but everyone involved (including: Beth B - grant writer, the LCA Advisory Panel, the staff at Four Dimensions and various city agencies) has worked very hard to get us to this point, and now that the improvements are finally happening, I couldn’t be more pleased. We hope the improved medians will be a stunning, visual reminder of the pride we, the community, have in Longfellow!

The landscape team anticipates that the entire project will take about 8 days. The plan is to start at MLK and work down to the Yerba Beuna median, working median by median to clean up the weeds and litter, transplant certain plants to different areas and remove un-needed plants, install irrigation and finally plant the new plants. The work will take place from about 7am to 3pm.

It would be great, if anyone has the time, to take some pictures of the improvements as they happen.

Phat Beets “Allyship” Program

Phat Beets Produce is a food justice collective in the North Oakland Flatlands that connects small farmers to urban communities through markets, produce stands, csa’s, and gardens. We rely on the support of community to make our programs operate.  We get very little funding and we don’t ask for much money from our community, but we do ask for support.  Consider joining one of our neighborhood organizing committees, becoming a monthly volunteer, signing up for our Allyship program.  More information on opportunities for this Fall and Winter below.

“Allyship” Program

The Allyship program is based on the framework of a traditional internship program with an emphasis on local leadership support.  The program provides an opportunity to work in the field of food justice in a supportive role while participating in an active anti-oppression study group.  The program works to provide a framework for effective, simultaneous development of both programmatic and personal development work in the field of food justice.  These positions are UNPAID, produce and materials are provided.
